Letter, 1800, Sept. 9, Kelso.

Scott and Ballantyne met as boys at the Kelso Grammar School. They both went on to Edinburgh University. In 1795, Ballantyne returned to Kelso to practice law and shortly thereafter founded the pro-Tory Kelso Mail, which he edited and printed. Their business relationship began in 1799 when Ballantyne printed Scott's first pamphlets. Ballantyne became Scott's printer. His brother Alexander ('Sandy') took over the Kelso Mail and another brother John founded the Ballantyne Press, with Scott's support.
